Learning Model Update

The District has shared that escalating COVID-19 cases across the Kansas City-metro and within our own school community prompted Board of Education members and district leaders to convene a special meeting to discuss our learning models moving forward. The Board of Education voted Nov. 17 to make changes to some of our district learning models.

  • The Board voted unanimously to move students in grades 7-12 who are learning through our in-person learning track to a virtual model starting on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020. Current plans call for virtual learning to continue through at least the end of the first semester, Jan. 21, 2021. The Board will meet to determine learning modes after Jan. 21 on or around Jan. 14, 2020. For the entire explanation from District, please visit the main website HERE.

A letter from Dr. Sharp about the change:

With Tuesday night’s decision by our Board of Education to move back into a VIRTUAL Learning environment for all LSR7 4th-12th grade students, I want to share with you details of the plan that will impact your PLMS student.  Students will begin virtual learning on Monday, November 23, and continue through the end of the first semester, January 21.  A decision regarding what learning model will be used for semester two, beginning January 25, will be made no later than January 14.

Next Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24, will resemble “at-home” learning days similar to our asynchronous days earlier this fall. Teachers will post assignments by 9 am and be available via email throughout the day to respond to students’ questions. We will resume our new VL schedule with students checking in with each class throughout their day on Monday, November 30.

PLMS will utilize a similar yet slightly different schedule that students and families became familiar with before shifting to Hybrid back in October. District leadership and Board of Education expectations call for more live interaction among teachers and students. Once our regular VL schedule resumes after Thanksgiving, students will check-in “live” with each class every day. Additionally, we will be keeping our Hybrid “WEDNESDAY” format during VL as students have become comfortable with the live help sessions offered from 9:30-11:00 am and again from 1:00-2:25 pm. (Please see our new attached schedule).

Lastly, we will be offering Hybrid Group “A” students that attend on (Monday/Tuesday) the opportunity to access the building next week should they need to retrieve belongings from their lockers, band instruments, etc. They were not able to get these items before this announcement was made. Only students will be allowed to check into the building to get their belongings.

We will be sending additional communication to families on Friday to outline the meeting codes for all teachers’ advisories, classes, and help session codes.

Finally, thank you in advance for your continued flexibility and patience as we respond to the growing percentage of community spread and the need to maintain our students’ and staff’s safety.

Accessing Meals during Virtual Learning

Meal Delivery: Each day our transportation teams will pick up meals from Nutrition Services between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and then distribute meals through our middle school bus routes and stops.

Parents and/or students may pick up meals from the bus stops. Meals are available for all children 18 and under in our community. Students need not be bus riders or an LSR7 student to receive meals. Parents may pick up for other families and one student may pick up meals for their siblings.

To help you find the bus stop closest to your home, an online search tool accessible from our home page has been created for your convenience. Type in your address and find the closest bus stop by clicking here. We anticipate that our meals will be delivered between 11 a.m. and noon. Our search tool will provide time estimations associated with each designated stop.

Meals Curbside Pick Up Change: Due to bond project construction starting at the beginning of the year, the Lee’s Summit High School curbside pick-up location for free LSR7 meals will change to Pleasant Lea Middle School starting on Jan. 4. There are no other changes to our meal distribution plan.

Again, starting Jan. 4, free meals may be picked up curbside at Pleasant Lea Middle School, Lee’s Summit West High School and Lee’s Summit North High School from noon to 1 p.m. daily. They will also be delivered Monday through Friday at our designated bus stop locations.

As a reminder, our meals are free for all children 18 and under in our community. For bus stop pick-up locations, visit our Meal Distribution location search tool or call (816) 986-4BUS (4287).

Thank you to our Nutrition Services and Transportation teams for working diligently to organize plans to provide meals to our school community during our time of virtual learning!
